All the way, 2003

Oil and mixed media on wood panel

Since the 1970s, Snyder has layered and incorporated into her works unique materials such as fabric, straw, gel, glitter, flowers, etc., which not only transform the dimension of the painted surface but bring new possibilities to the artmaking process itself. One of the paintings in this collection, All The Way (2003), serves as a good example for the versatility of Snyder’s creative practice, as composited upon the wooden panel is the meticulous yet playful arrangement of herbs, seeds, wooden balls, and cloth, all bound together by the vivid pigments of oil and acrylic paint.

Study for symphony for A.D, 1981

Lithograph, oil, acrylic, pencil, colored pen

Also available for viewing is a variety of Snyder’s prints, another essential component to her practice. A prominent piece is Study for Symphony for A.D. (1981), a lithograph hand-colored with oil paint and dedicated to Dr. Alvin Donnenfeld, the obstetrician who delivered Molly, the artist’s daughter. This print is one example amongst many that gestures at Snyder’s appreciation for children’s art, evident in the expressive strokes created by the artist’s own fingers that mimic a child’s carefree way of doodling.

Black Lake Redux, 2021

12-color indirect gravure, aquatint, silkscreen, hand-dusting with gold pigment, hand-coloring in red/pink pastel on Kitakata paper

22 3/4 × 38 in | 57.8 × 96.5 cm

Signed, titled, and marked "AP" in pencil, lower margin

Created more recently, Black Lake Redux (2021) provides further proof of Snyder’s undaunting experimental approach to art, for it was created out of Snyder’s studio in Woodstock, NY during the unprecedented circumstances of COVID-19 in which the artist had to send proofs via mail to Robert Townsend’s printing studio in Georgetown, MA. The resulting print is a vibrant amalgamation of multiple techniques, ranging from woodcut and silkscreen to indirect gravure and hand-coloring.

We invite you to experience this selection of Joan Snyder’s works curated by the gallery, all of which are available for private viewing until February 10, 2025 at Anders Wahlstedt Fine Art by appointment.
